FLOWERS GROWN SLOWLY BY HAND, IN THE DANDENONG RANGES
Tucked into the bushland of the Dandenong Ranges, Thistle & Weeds is a small flower farm and floral studio shaped by the seasons, the soil and the quiet rhythm of growing things by hand.
Every arrangement begins here. Among tall trees, shifting light, imperfect rows and flowers grown slowly, thoughtfully and with care.
This isn’t a factory or a production line. It’s a living place. And every bunch carries a little of that with it.

the way we grow
Our farm is guided by care rather than control. We don’t use harmful pesticides or chemical shortcuts. Instead, we focus on healthy soil, beneficial insects and giving the land time to do what it does best when it’s properly looked after.
Our flowers grow with the local climate, not against it. They aren’t forced into perfection or manipulated to look the same. They’re seasonal, expressive, sometimes a little wild. But always full of life.
Growing this way isn’t always the easiest path, but it’s the one that feels most honest.

a living ecosystem
Rather than planting for sameness, our fields are grown with diversity in mind. Companion planting, mixed varieties and overlapping bloom times create a resilient little ecosystem that supports itself naturally.
Bees, ladybirds, and other beneficial insects are part of the process here, not a problem to be eliminated. Each section of the farm plays a role in supporting the others, creating flowers that are stronger, more characterful and deeply connected to place.
What grows here is shaped by balance, patience and trust in the land.
from seed to vase

Every arrangement begins long before flowers are gathered.
Seeds, bulbs and tubers are chosen with care, often sourced from local growers where possible, then planted by hand and tended through the seasons.

Flowers are harvested at their most expressive moment, often just hours before they’re arranged.
Design happens slowly and intuitively, guided by what’s blooming now rather than rigid recipes or trends.

Each arrangement is made to order, wrapped beautifully and finished with your handwritten message.
Nothing is pulled from a warehouse shelf. Every gift is created fresh, with the person receiving it in mind.

samantha nelson | OWNER, grower & florist
I grow seasonal flowers by hand in the Dandenong Ranges and arrange them fresh to order for people who want their flowers to feel personal, thoughtful and unlike anything picked up from a standard florist fridge.
This studio grew from a longing for slower, more intentional beauty and from the grounding comfort of growing something living with my own hands. What began as a small patch of borrowed earth became a practice rooted in storytelling, artistry and reverence for the natural world.
Flowers have always felt like a language to me. They hold emotion without needing to explain it. At Thistle & Weeds, I create with what’s growing now, shaping each arrangement to feel personal, expressive and deeply present.
